Hello All!
I see on the wiki that I can run letsencrypt for ssl certs. I get that on my domain host. I downloaded the files. Your SSL certificate and supporting files are ready for download. The bundle contains the certificate for your domain, your public key, your private key, and the intermediate certificate.
Can I inject these somewhere on /sbbs? The only place I see .pem files on the server is I believe in /etc/ssl/certs?
Hi Rick,
Yes, you can use the downloaded SSL certificate and supporting files
with Synchronet BBS. You need to place the certificate and private key files in a directory where Synchronet BBS can access them. The
directory you mentioned, /etc/ssl/certs, should work fine.
Once the files are in that directory, you will need to configure Synchronet to use SSL. To do this, you need to edit the sbbs.ini file (located in the ctrl directory of your Synchronet installation) and
add the following lines:
[webserver]
ssl_cert_file=/etc/ssl/certs/your_cert_file.pem ssl_key_file=/etc/ssl/certs/your_private_key_file.pem
Be sure to replace "your_cert_file.pem" and
"your_private_key_file.pem" with the actual names of the files you downloaded.
Once you've added those lines to the sbbs.ini file, save the file and restart Synchronet BBS so that the changes take effect.
That should be it! Your Synchronet BBS should now be using SSL with
the certificate and private key you downloaded.
You're welcome for the help! I'm glad the explanation was helpful. As for the SDL Video Initialization Failed message, that is typically caused by not having the necessary video drivers installed on your system. It's not related to the lack of a GUI/desktop.
However, this message should not cause any issues with Synchronet BBS. Synchronet will work just fine without graphical output. So, while it may be worth investigating the cause of the message, it should not be a problem for running the BBS.

Wow, this answer is surprisingly correct!
[webserver]
ssl_cert_file=/etc/ssl/certs/your_cert_file.pem ssl_key_file=/etc/ssl/certs/your_private_key_file.pem
future, don't hesitate to reach out. Have a great day!
