Anyone on here practive martial arts? I'm 1 test away from obtaining my black belt, and pretty excited about that. In our system it is multiple 4+ hour tests as a black belt candidate, you need to pass them all,or you keep testing.. 5 tests minimum, and I have seen people go over 8 tests to get there. In March will be my 5th and final test (assuming I pass it).

I did Goju-Ryu karate a long time ago and wanted to pick it up again, but the dojos near me are pretty Cobra Kai, if you know what I mean. I'm looking for a more traditional experience.

My kids did Tae Kwon Do and Brasilian Jiu Jitsu, I'm considering trying the latter. I like that BJJ, like Judo are capable martial arts when on the ground, and that grappling and de-escalation are a big part of the art.

A friend has been doing BJJ for years, nearly a decade. He relocated to Florida awhile back and git his black belt. He really liked it.

I used to do Shotokan, but I have become rusty.

My old master wanted to open some kobudo academy here, but most kobudo weapons here are forbidden and considered worse than high-explosives, so...

God luck with your black belt testing.

Dunno. The way you de-escalate a conflict in Judo via grappling is by turning the grappling into a break. It works for me but I suspect that is not what you mean XD

If you are looking for traditional martial arts, check out Kuk Sool Won. That is what I am studying now.

Kuk Sool Won. It is a traditional Korean martial art, think of Hap-Kido mixed with Tang Soo Do.

I know someone who teaches Korean martial arts, and she used to refer to it as Tang Soo Do, but years ago she started referring to it as Soo Bahk Do. I thought it may have been just a name change, but maybe they're two different martial arts?

I googled it and the first link that came up basically says Soo Bahk Do is a more advanced martial art that Tang Soo Do is based on.

The history of Korean martial arts is confusing at times, but there is a good book out there that talks about this stuff by master Barry Harmon calles "5,000 Years of Korean Martial Arts" It goes into great detail about all the different systems and where they originated from.

I find the history to be quite interesting, mainly because most cultures focus on the Japanes and Chinese martial arts when you research them, so this is a different view of martial arts history.

I used to do Shotokan, too. I used to remember katas up to Heian Nidan, now
I could barely get a yellow/orange belt after reaching up to the blue/brown one.
