While I highly doubt his website was "hacked" or that anyone actually cared about his site beyond it being good for a laugh, tossing something like that at the top of your page just invites skript kiddies to try (assuming they stumble over it).

What likely happened is he screwed up the backend, didn't know how to fix it and gave up.
