• Lotus 123 3.1 for DOS Question

From James Tyree@VERT/AMSTRAD to All on Wed Feb 22 23:22:42 2023
    Hey everyone!

I thought I would ask the question here and see if any "old-timers" might have an idea as to what might be wrong.

As the subject says, I'm using Lotus 123 version 3.1 for DOS. It's a fresh install from NOS floppies. I installed on a 486SX and everything wen't perfectly.

My problem is, I can't enter any numbers in the cells. If I enter a number and press Enter, it replaces the number with 0. It does this regardless of the cell formatting. I tried openning one of the stock spreadsheets that came on the install disks and every cell where there should be a number (was following along a tutorial guide and could see the numbers in the screenshot), there was a 0.

I know version 3.1 had issues, but I'm sure it still allowed you to enter a dang number. Anyone know what might be causing this? I asked ChatGPT and it just laughed at me.

    James

Are you running this in a command prompt under Windows or actual DOS?
    If DOS, what version?

I'm booting straight to DOS ver 5.0. I don't even have Windows installed.

    I'd try with a bare-bones config.sys and autoexec.bat.

I'm booting straight to DOS ver 5.0. I don't even have Windows installed.

    I'd try with a bare-bones config.sys and autoexec.bat.

I installed version 3.4 for DOS and though it's more graphical than "old school dos like", it doesn't suffer from the problem. I'll reinstall version 3.1 and play with the config/autoexec files to see if I can get any different behavior.

Thank you for the suggestion poindexter!

I'm more inclined to think it's a setting in Lotus 123 than something to do with your startup.

    Hi James,

It sounds like you may be experiencing an issue with Lotus 1-2-3's default cell value. By default, Lotus 1-2-3 sets the cell value to zero, so any input you provide will be overwritten with zero.

To fix this issue, you can try creating a new worksheet with a new cell format to overwrite the default cell format. Here are the steps you can try:

    1. Open Lotus 1-2-3 and create a new worksheet.
    2. Select the blank cell where you want to enter a number.
    3. Press F4 to open the Format dialogue box.
    4. Select the appropriate format for your cell, such as "General" or "Number". 5. Press Enter to save the new format.

You should now be able to enter numbers in the cell without them being overwritten by zero.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
