and replace her with a new guy." She leaves and they get a new Dr. fresh out of college which takes 33% of the load, leaving the department defficitary because the group now has no capability to push his own way up.

I am not complaining. Karme is a bitch. The West will pay the price for management overbloat. The only problem I have with that is I am trapped there.

well with covid companies in the usa learned 2 things.

    1) people don't have to be there, they can work remotely.
    2) they don't even NEED a lot of the people they hired when they actually look at their performance.

They did that with my company i was at for 17 years. first these extra people worked remotely. then they realized they sucked and they didn't need them.
There was this fat bitch in HR who i called big kathy who had a huge ego and did all the bad shit like handle writups and harrassment shit.

they eventually got rid of her ass after only being there a year and they never replaced her.

In the movie Grand Torino, the story takes place in a Wayne County (Detroit) neighborhood that is mostly Hmong refugees.

I don't know why so many of these hmong went to minnesota; it's cold as fuck there. it must be 10x worse for them based on genetics. I'm norwegian and i'm genetically suited for the cold. it was in the negative digits and i can go out and take the garbage out with no shoes on in shorts and a tshirt.

dark asians aren't suited for the cold.

control over everything there.. The only unusual thing there, being a communist country, is that they do seem to have a middle class. Usually there is a tiny percentage of very rich people and the rest are all
    super poor.

You're viewing a union as a ceiling regarding what you cannot do, but it is more or less a window. There is an upper limit, but there is also a lower limit as to what they can do to you. If polies are well made, consistently enforced, and predictable in outcome, then a union isn't necessary. Unfortunately some shops don't play by those rules, and policies and procedures are adhered to or ignored on a whim. The bargaining unit agreement protects the employees from random stuff that cannnot be enforced.

I've been in unions and i've never been protected other than the supervisor is not allowed to hop on a forktruck.

having my pay grossly regulated is also not protection. if it's a lot of money, that's great. but i've seen when that's not the case.

regardless, in a right to work state, unions are useless and i'd never work
at a union. they have zero pull.

I used to have a book on IT careers a long time ago. It warned against
going in to middle management-type roles. Mostly because when cuts come,
those are the first to go and the company realizes that the company runs
just as good without them. Over time, though, the company forgets that
    and hires more middle management.

well from what i've seen most of the time, middle mgmt are the work horses. I've also worked at a company where there was too many managers and all they would do was come up with ideas to have more meetings to justify their existance. in some of these cases i think they really did not have much to do at all.

Ever since the passing of the civil rights act, HR and Middle management have been becoming larger and bloated. This is due to the vagueness of the act and generally because a lot of modern jobs are useless.

At ZDS we called that the "Chief to Indian ratio." When money is good, they added levels of middle management. More or less they had some mid level folk that had been around forever, and would fill the middle areas with them depending on their skill sets

This is what happens over time to many companies - especially large ones.

At a previous company that I worked for, my co-workers and I thought about
the structure of our division. We could easily break down people into 3 groups:
    1. Revenue producing. These were people who did the work that the customer paid for.
    2. Useful overhead. These people didn't do work for the customer, but did things that were requires. If they didn't do that work there would be negative consequences.
    3. Useless overhead. We tried, really tried, but we couldn't see anything useful that these people did (other than create carbon dioxide and other things to make the plants grow).

Guess which one was the largest group?

The Ignorant Elitists are, by and large, complete morons and useless. If
left to themselves, they'd have dead end jobs flipping burgers.

So certain groups started making it easier for these Ignorant Elitists to get and keep jobs. So a company hires someone, but he doesn't work out. Can't just get rid of him because of the cost (yes, I have worked in places
where the incompetant kept their jobs just because it was too costly
to get rid of them). What to do? Well, move them into HR and Middle Management.
Oh, then they pushed more rules on companies that made things like HR
more powerful - even though they were filled with complete morons.

I worked at a plastics manufacturing company and when I started they
had just promoted the lead accountant to the head of HR. This
person was a very good worker. After 14 years, she was still the
head of HR. In charge of all hiring and helping with employee
benefits for 4 plants in the US.

Not sure if she was the exception to the rule, but she really helped
employees in the company. She helped me numerous times and I
respected her. She never put rules into effect just to be a tyrant.

    Just my opinion.

Correct, HR has been the dump for unproductive and moronic workers so they will not disturb the work. Seems to backfire since they ARE the managenment after all. This is why if you want to become a manager, be a moron.
