If I remember right, lastpass was hacked last september. Good think I deleted my lastpass account and moved to bitwarden.

... keypass is good as well.

someone tried to get into my cashapp and i got sent a login code.

Wife gets texted a Paypal 2FA security code which is odd because she doesn't have a Paypal account. There's some new method that "hackers" are using to send text alerts, the texts look like their are coming via a website instead of a phone number. It's the strangest thing, and just totally random. It's hard to reassure people who don't know that "we're OK, I'm monitoring stuff..."

After my mother got gift card scammed it's turned into a every other day phone call to make sure she hasn't gotten/taken any weird phone calls. She's finally able to accept that unless a name pops up on her received calls that it's not worth picking up.

Things are messed up all over.

i keep getting these weird txts from people that go nowhere.
they act like they know me but say their secretary put in the wrong number. they usually don't reply back after that.

just this last time i kept trying to talk to them and then it said it was a girl and sent me some asian pic. asked for my picture and i said no.
Then it said it would fuck my mother, etc etc so i knew it was probably one of those indian scammers in that one infamous city.

I'm pretty sure that I got my skeptical nature from my mom. She's 88, and I have little fear of her getting phone-scammed. If she's even slightly unsure about a phonecall, she'll call and ask me about it.

Mostly though, she just ignores any number she doesn't recognize.

    https://www.youtube.com/@JimBrowning

A bunch of the youtube anti-scammers set up this "anti-scam" callcenter for a week and filmed it. Jim Browning was there, but always wore a mask to hide his identity. Honestly, I'd probably hide my identity too if I was costing people hundreds of thousands of dollars or more. People kill over that shit.

When I get those messages it generally turns out to be a crypto investment scam where they let you "win" a couple hundred on an exchange they use and when you deposit more hopping for a bigger pay out they just clean you out and cut contact. It is a shame that people fall for that.

Youtube videos where people strike back at the scammers over in India. These people pretend to be old people who pretend to go along with the scammers, and the scammers ask for access to their computer to "fix" their problems. But when they do, the scam baiters actually go in and cause problems for the scammers. Usually deleting their files, or downloading them and calling the victims to let them know that they've been scammed.

Either way it's entertaining for us to see those guys get scammed themselves!

well it's a losing battle, but better than nothing. these places are now just setting up in shared work spaces and they are very mobile.

i think the most good they do is when they get the people's information and contact them.

new credit card number. of course she didn't.

Yeah, I went through a gift card scam with my mom, she lost about $2,500 to scammers on 2 different occasions. I was so upset, but I had to make sure to direct my anger where it was deserved. My mom felt so bad and I felt bad that it happened. Her Mac had some weird Java program that kept trying to fire off. thankfully it didn't do anything, and eventually I figured out where the bugger lived and removed it (Mac's, what can you do?).

It was extremely scarry. They had her drive to Target and Best Buy, buy several $500 gift cards, give over the numbers and tear up the gift cards. Kept her on the phone so she couldn't call me, which was her first thought, but they scared her and talked very nicely to her. It was fucked up.

I took the remains of the gift cards back to the Best Buy and Target (money was gone, fuck gift cards.) and spent a couple hours "talking" with their managers about, oh I don't know, maybe TRAINING their cashiers about this shit?! Not carrying gift cards, etc??!!

Capitalism in America at it's best. Now I have to spend the rest of my mom's life reminding her that no one will ever call her asking for money. Not me, not anyone, and anyone that does is stealing from my inheritance... I mean her. ;) It sucks, but she's got it I think. Of course I thought she understood it the first time.

She would take their passports while inprocessing in Dubai and then hold the passports for like years while the workers paid off their "debt" that they incurred signing on to the project. It is basically human slavery. Super fucked up.

If I remember right, lastpass was hacked last september. Good think I deleted my lastpass account and moved to bitwarden.
    I love me some BitWarden!

Am I too old-school? I use keepass with a strong password and sync the
password file to a personal cloud account? Works on multiple PCs and my
    phone, and it's free.

And there's another New-Years-Resolution for me... start using a
password control application. My current system of an Office document
and yellow stickies is not ideal. ;-)

Is 'KeePass' the one to go with? Recommendations appreciated, and it
    needs to run on Linux.

    Hey Gamgee,

BitWarden is free and open source (with a .89+ cent a month paid tier) and available for both windows and linux. Can be self or cloud hosted. So far they have been a reputable company. They have passed security audits for far.

Keepass and close derivates are fine for Linux desktops.

If you prefer something CLI oriented, there is pass, also known as password-store.

Nah man can't be too old school! I use BitWarden because it's a free opensource program. BUT, I only use it for my throw-away accounts that I can replace without repercussions, and aren't attached to my important billing accounts etc... The main reason I like to use bitwarden is because I keep the program on my desktop, an app on my phone because when I am traveling (I travel a bit for work) I always seem to get logged out of something somewhere, especially when I connect to a new network or decide to VPN - I am booted out and get tired of being booted out of my own stuff. I could do the cloud way for sure, but this has worked well for me. I for one though, do not trust any password keeper service that charges you, or has a corporate name attached!

We're not truly safe, 'cept down here!

It works for me, and it has a ton of plugins. I use one that will
auto-launch Remote Desktop or Putty under Windows, I'm sure there's
    similar functionality for Linux.

I end up using it more like a configuration DB, putting notes into
Keepass and using it to launch terminal instances.

Okay, cool. I have (probably) decided to go with 'KeepassXC' which is a
fork of Keepass, and is cross-platform, runs on Linux without needing
    'mono' to be installed.

If you prefer something CLI oriented, there is pass, also known
    as password-store.

For now I'm going with a graphical client, but I'll keep that in mind,
    thanks!

Then it said it would fuck my mother, etc etc so i knew it was probably one of those indian scammers in that

Yep, Love that guy. Sounds like it's almost his profession these days. Some of those videos are quite amazing. Honestly I wish his kind of "white hat" hacking was taught more in colleges. Had a friend who was just out of high school and went right into computer security. Wanted to be a white hat hacker. He used to bring in some weird backdoor stuff that he was learning (hacking his home network). It was fascinating.

i dont think it's hacking. i just think he has a version of anydesk that reverses the connection. sometimes he says that people have to approve it.
so maybe it's not even a modified version.

i like that guy that targets the package stealers too. i would just have it shoot out loads of fart spray and dye.

Well "Social Hacking" is a kind of hacking. Tricking the human brain into doing something to grant you access to something. So like hypnosis, or trying to get someone to reveal or do something that may not be in their best interest I'd say is a form of hacking. I mean scammers are trying to hack their victims into giving up their cash. I'd call scammers "Brown Hat" Hackers because they got shit all over them. :P
